South African Gold Krugerrand Coins
½ ounce Gold South African Krugerrands!
The Krugerrand is probably the most recognized gold bullion coin in the world.
Gold South African Krugerrands have no denomination because their value was linked to the daily gold price. The obverse of the Krugerrand, depicting Paul Kruger, was struck from the original die used in 1892 for the Kruger half-crown coin. The reverse was designed and engraved by Coert Steynberg, a famous South African sculptor, and depicted a prancing springbok, a national symbol.
For a period, the Krugerrand was the only gold bullion coin available to the international market. Bullion and proof fractions of ½, ¼ and 1/10th oz Krugerrands were added to the series in 1980. In many ways, the Krugerrand provided the model for government mints to begin producing their own bullion coins.
